Basic gameplay should work without patches. Multiplayer is most dependent on patches, yet that's gone anyway when the patches are gone. DLC, buy at your own risk...

I agree in theory most games should work without patches but the more complex games get the more game breaking bugs we see. Even the all mighty perfectionists Nintendo have had some gamebreaking bugs in recent years and that was on a standard def console. It is just the nature of the beast we live in as games get more and more complex so I have accepted that. This is also why I think patches should be able to download them and store them seperately.
