With the VC out, Nintendo could at least release Mother 1 on the (modded) Famicom. They've translated it already, so it wouldn't cost them anything right now.

Mother 3 would require translation. And they'd have to release it as a GBA game. And it probably wouldn't sell (see Mother 2 sales.)

They could just release all three for DS.

Mother 2 didn't sell because of a crappy advertising campaign and the market simply wasn't ready.

I bet you 100000 dollars that if they translated Mother 3 and released the 3 games for DS, it would sell at least a million copies, which would be more than enough to make back. Word of mouth, and interest from the SSB series would propell it to 500,000 copies alone.
