Actually, yes, they do get punished for lesser graphics. Please read the reviews on metacritic: the simplistic graphics are cited as an important detractor for Wii Play, Wii Sports and, with the recent review submitted by IGN, for Big Brain as well. Simply read the reviews. It's right there.
