Monster Hunter is more popular for two reasons.  It's the better game and it was already massively popular before other developers started ripping off the concept.  Why bother asking this when I stated it was the better game the post you quoted?  It doesn't change how any of the games mechanics are.

I think it's more that it was the first one to get popular doing it. I think it's extremely similar to what CoD is to the FPS genre.

It was the first one to get popular doing it, but what other Monster Hunter like games were out prior to its popularity?  Exactly.  It's the massive amount of popularity it received that's the reason why we're seeing these clones in the first place.  It wasn't until God Eater that we saw the first Monster Hunter clone and that was in 2010.  Monster Hunter has been around since 2004, but it didn't start to gain a massive amount of popularity until Monster Hunter for PSP, and the massive amount of popularity is exclusive to Japan.  Outside of Japan it's fairly niche.

People might say Phantasy Star Online, Universe, or Phantasy Star Portable, but those aren't anything like Monster Hunter.  Those are more like console versions of Diablo games.  Less like Monster Hunter or any of its clones.

PSP was certainly made to mimic MH. Not so much Universe, but that was certainly the reason why PSP was created (and I don't think they're that dissimilar outside of the fact that Portable is faster and is actually fun to play by yourself).
