To be fair, better hardware allows for further innovations in game design / gameplay. As an example, just look at the transition from SNES to N64 -- the better graphics (or more accurately better hardware) permitted the transition from 2D to 3D and the development of pioneering games such as mario 64, ocarina of time, and golden eye.
People like yourself use the term 'graphics' to signify superficial upgrades in visuals when in reality 'graphics' reflects better hardware, which allows for further innovations in game design and development.
