IS WARIO SPEAKING GERMAN? OR IS HE GERMAN?
Hey Guys!
Do you remember the debate about whether or not Wario in MarioKart64 speaks German?
Alot of people especially Germans thought he said "So ein Mist" which roughly translates to "Darn it/Shit"
Since mishearing lyrics is a common phenomenon it was just normal for most people not having much contact with German to assume he says "D'oh I missed" and to think Germans were the ones mishearing what Wario says.
But "D'oh I missed" does not make any sense especially when you are fluent in German. Why?
#1 Because Wario clearly has an "N" right after the "I" and before the "missed"
"D'oh Ine missed" does not make any sense but "So ein Mist" totally does.

#2 The reason for the "So" to sound almost like a "D'oh" is because of the bad N64 audio quality/sample rate and the "so" being at the beginning of the audio file.
Alot of compression automatically cuts frequencies thats also why people on a phone sound like shit.

Great question! Which brings me to
#3 German has several ways to pronounce the S. This is what English speakers always forget.
Most people think every S is the sam. Be it "Sandra" or "socks" and therefore their conclusion is:
"it makes no sense that "MIST" sounds like an S but "SO" does not therefore it is "D'oh I missed" what else would it be?
Right the S in mist/missed is the typical English sounding S yes
BUT
as soon as a word starts with S in German it has a completely different pronounciation.
