Microsoft may not be dropping their ties with Nokia, but Nokia's dropping their ties with them.  Nokia just announced Android based phones.

MS does not have 'ties' with Nokia, they OUTRIGHT OWN all of Nokia cellphone business.  Nokia releasing an Android phone is MS releasing an Android phone.

The remaining independent Nokia company does not produce any cellphones, all they do is cellular network gear, maps, and IP licencing.

MS makes MUCH more money from Android phone licencing anyways, so releasing one themselves is hardly a big change.

By offering their own 'add ons' to Android that promote compatability with WIndows Phone ecosystem, maybe they can draw more customers to WP.

You are right.  I just found it very odd that they'd release an Android based device for the reasons you mentioned.  Slimebeast's comments got me thinking and I wonder if they may be thinking of abandoning Balmer's vision of Windows beta devices and their dysfunctional eco system.  P.S. making an Android phone isn't going to get people to switch over to Window Mobile.
