In addition to Nintendo games and their hardware, I love them because of their attitude.
They always bring different views and solutions on the market, a good alternative.
Just look at the last two generations of consoles, PS3/Xbox360 are clones, Wii is the one who brought a great alternative to the generation and selection of a different, similar to the situation and the current generation, PS4/XboxOne clones, while the Wii U brings something new and different to them.
Nintendo makes different hardware that offers a different experience and make totally different games that are very high quality and very fun to play, and that's the point.
Nintendo goes generally safe because unlike Sony and Microsoft, they are just gaiming companie, so they cant just compensation minus from the other spheres of business, unlike Sony and Microsoft, that is why they are on market for more than 100 years.
Nintendo needs to change, (for example, it's a shame to have such a accaunt system), but I would not want to be like Sony and Microsoft, it would not be good for anyone, not for Nintendo, not for gamers.
