I tried FFVI and VII for the first time in 2012 and the annoying random encounters made me rage quit. Same thing happened later with IX although otherwise I found that game delightful. X however I can't get enough - it's the only FF of them that motivates the player to battle thanks to the sphere grid and the battles are actually fun.
Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.
