No, you dont need a lot of games that break 1 billion dollar revenue in 3 days, that's idiotic. Naughty Dog's Uncharted games are what you'd consider AAA in every regard, yet they are much less expensive to create (<20m$) and are always profitable.
If the product is good, it'll make a profit, if its not, it wont. Its the same basic concept in every single industry. But lets not kid ourselves. If Nintendo was on top, you'd be singing a very different tune.
