Because since the N64 Nintendo has always done something with their hardware that turns off third parties. First it was format issues then it was system specs. It's almost like Nintendo now thinks that their hardware exists first and foremost to facilitate the development of their own games, not as something that everyone would want to develop on. The Wii U, like the Wii before it, is simply not powerful enough in the eyes of third parties. That the Wii U is also selling terribly doesn't help, though then again the Wii sold incredibly well but that didn't encourage any third parties to develop for it simply because it was inadequate for their needs.

The Wii actually got good support but mostly from Japanese developers. They are many hidden gems on that machine. It's similar on Wii U to be honest, but with a little more western support at first. It's mostly western developers that shun Nintendo
