The reason this generation won't stick around as long into this gen IMO is that the 2 HD consoles were a bit ahead of their time and have already lasted 8 years in the limelight. The parts that make them up aren't going to get any cheaper considering they're all custom PPC SOCs (an architecture that's proved to be a dead end in a x86 and ARM based world) vs the newer consoles that are using commodity (x86) parts that will better benefit from industry process changes.

Most telling however is that the PS3 right now is retailing for $249 only $150 less than the PS4. At this time last gen the PS2 was $130 vs a $500 PS3. There's alot less economic incentive to keep these older more exotic systems alive
