I wanted to make a snide remark about how video games are dangerous to kids but this is just too awful.

The officer probably didn't want to shoot a kid either. Tragic stuff.

well then thinking before shooting helps alot.

I mean a Wiimote looks less like a gun than a toy gun does  and kids used toy guns for decades......  by now officers should know that someone opening a door holding something in his/her hands is not always going to kill them. Besides noone forces cops to wait for  the door to open while staying exactly in the center of the entrance  so they get shot easily...

If the kid was holding the Wiimote like other people hold their beer while opening the door (i doubt he was pointing the wiimote to the officers face)  wearing a west would have saved the officer even if the kid was going to shot the officer.

Its just an officer acting dumb. Also as far as I know holding a gun on ones own property is not illegal in any way I mean what if the person way someone cleaning his guns etc? Sure opening a door with a gun is not really smart but its legal. (correct me if I am wrong)

See my post above.

When it is a life or death situation you don't have time to think. If you walk through a bad neighborhood and someone comes around the corner with something that at the first glance looks like a gun, what do you do? Get out of the way or slowly examine the object?

Shoot the arm or leg not the face or chest. Or have a taser ready instead of a gun.  Or as you said take cover.
I mean I know what you are saying I once dropped a knife and automatically tried to catch it and cut my hand but I was 15 back then and that never happened again. You can train to not be a "slave" to your automated behavior and you can also do everything you can so that you will never end up in a situation where you need to fight this behavior.

Dont stay in the center of the entrance
Dont have a gun ready but a taser or use rubber bullets or pepper spray
Wear a west  etc.
look at peoples hands when they open a door.

All of this was up to the officer and everything could have prevented a kid from being murdered.
