An American teenager has been fatally shot after allegedly pointing a Wii controller at a police officer attempting to serve his father a probation violation warrant.
As reported by WSB-TV Atlanta, the officer told GBI investigators she shot Christopher Roupe, 17, when he pointed a gun at her as she attempted to serve the warrant. However, the attorney of Roupe's family - and witnesses - claim the teenager was only holding a Wiimote.
“We don't know where [the officer's] statement came from,” said Cole Law, representing the Roupe family. “The eyewitnesses on the scene clearly state that he had a Wii controller in his hand. He heard a knock at the door. He asked who it was, there was no response so he opened the door and upon opening the door he was immediately shot in the chest.”
“When we got up there, they said there was a Wii remote in his hand and she shot him,” said Tia Howard, a close neighbour who went to investigate the sound of gunfire.
“This is tragic,” said another neighbour, Ken Yates. “[The officer] came out of this house. She put her head in her hands and she was sobbing. Supposedly, he opened the door with a BB gun and in my opinion I think he was playing a game with his neighborhood buddies.”
The officer is now on administrative leave.
Christopher Roupe was in the junior Reserve Officers Training Corps at Woodland High, and wanted to be a US Marine.
“He was a good kid. He always hung out with me and he took up for me,” said friend William Corson.
