Launching when they did was the best possible move for Xbox, because of Sony.
Xbox not only does not have the brand power to overtake Playstation World Wide, but they also wouldn't be able to compete with their launch library had they waited for PS to amass more exclusives.
PS4 was probably ready for 2013 launch, considering their ability to stock effectively as opposed to they did with the PS3.

In fact, this is kind of a conspiracy of mine, I think Sony baited Microsoft, in order to play off the PR. Cause if MS was ready, then Sony could find someway to undercut them, which they did. And if MS wasn't ready then they could abuse that as well.

The way things are looking unless Microsoft makes some new IP's they are all sorts of fucked with Sony this gen. There will barely be exclusives between them and the majority of the exclusives Japanese or otherwise will be on either Sony or Nintendo platforms.
