I really think if Mario Kart 8 is as great as its trailers have been suggesting, it could be the only thing the Wii U needs to firmly plant its feet in the console war. A great MK game could push the Wii U's sales at least over XBONE's on a weekly basis, and if Nintendo can manage a second place home console lead in this gen, they'll be more than fine.
