An MMO is a much larger investment and they didn't remake it from scratch.

FFVII HD Remake would basically be a New IP at this point and since they would probably make it multiplat, it be alot more complicated then simply reusing old models and slapping HD textures on them.

'They didn't make it from scratch' - exactly. They assigned over 300 people just to fix a game.
