"Classic controllers" need a Wiimote to plug into.  I'd say the gamepad and 1 wiimote/nunchuk is the way to start.  I have a "U" Pro controller as well, and that thing is one sleek and sweet controller.

I can play Wii games and play games like New Super Mario U and Super Mario 3D World with my GF?


NSMBU works with GamePad, Pro Controller and Wiimote (horizontal). Wiimote+Nunchuk,  Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro don't work.

3D World works with GamePad, Pro Controller, Wiimote (horizontal), Wiimote+Nunchuk, Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro.

For DK: Tropical Freeze, GamePad, Pro Controller, Wiimote (horizontal), Wiimote+Nunchuk are confirmed. Not sure about Classic Controller and Classic Controller Pro.

I wouldn't buy a Classic Controller Pro because not many Wii U games are compatible and you have to plug it in a Wiimote.

Buy a Wiimote + Nunchuk and you can play all Wii games + NSMBU + 3D World. It's also the best method for Pikmin 3.

A Pro Controller would be the better choice if you only play Wii U games, I have several games that only support GamePad or Pro Controller.

I'm not sure if the PS4 version of Rayman Legends is better. It's already 1080p 60 FPS with razor sharp textures on Wii U. Asymmetric coop is amazing. If your girlfriend isn't very skilled, she can help you on the touch screen or vice versa.
