Especially this. Many people think graphical improvements are because dev learn to better use the hardware which is only part of the "problem". Of course dev get used better over time to a given hardware but also tools improve over time, APIs improve but also coding tricks and new efficient ways of tricking us making us believe something looks more realistic. This is in some way ongoing science and the web has several ppts of devs showing what they are doing with given hardware (I remember sth. from Dice about occlusion culling). All the parts together make games look better over time.
