Didnt the gamecube also sell really well during end of the year? If the wii u can get some decent numbers with mario kart 8 and and smash bros then it should be somewhere around gamecube numbers. I might be wrong though.

So far the Wii U is about 1.4m behind in the US for the same time frame.  In Japan it is about 450k behind where the Gamecube was in February 2003, though that does give the Gamecube a bit more time since it released in September.  In Other (outside of Japan and the Americas), the Wii U has shipped 1.49m in 5 quarters.  This compares to 1.86 million for the Gamecube.  The Wii U also had a more favorable release timing getting 2 holiday seasons during that period versus 1 for the GC.

As for catching up, the Gamecube had a very strong 2003 holiday season thanks to the price cut to $99.  In the US, Oct/Nov/Dec 2003 sales were 2.15m which is pretty much equal to what the Wii U has sold in the US in the past 15 months combined.  It shipped 1.25m to Other in the 6 months from July-December 2003.  In Japan it managed just over a million between where we are in Feburary and the end of the year.

Matching US Gamecube numbers is probably impossible for this year.  The other two are longshots.
