Getting rid of the Gamepad will not fly, getting rid of the Wii U too quickly will not fly, cutting the price of the Wii U currently will not fly. Nintendo pretty much trapped themselves with the Wii U. All they can do as of now is try to push their flagship first party titles as much as possible. (i.e. Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong, SSB, among others.) They need to make these games seem as worthy of owning as possible. They need to let the public know that the Wii U does have games and that it's also cheaper than the other consoles this generation.

The 3DS will most likely sell as well as the GBA, which is a good thing. They have Kirby, Yoshi, and SSB coming out this year and those are all pretty large IPs as well. After this year they'll most likely have Pokemon Z/Gen. 3 remake, another Monster Hunter, and possibly a new IP. If the 3DS finishes with 75+ Million, it'll be a good thing. (Although I am expecting more than 80 Million, which is great.)

What do they need to do for next generation? Well, they need to prepare for that now. They must hire more employees in order to increase production of games, they should buy out a few studios in order to guarantee filler games for months when Nintendo has nothing big, and they need to increase the value of the Virtual Console so it can be something that'll make people happy when there are no first party titles releasing.

One thing Nintendo needs to get through their thick heads is that third parties will not support, no matter what. Even when the Wii was the best selling console, they still got bad third party support. When the GameCube was the most technically impressive console, they still had mediocre third party support. And now that the Wii U is the cheapest console (albeit with bad sales) they still have no third party support. They need to stop caring about third parties because third parties don't care about Nintendo, they need to grow themselves.
