The industry is different. It has become much more efficient at building hype, and more prominent retailers are doing preorders than they were in the past. Accordingly, the PS4 and XBone were going to have stronger initial sales, but quicker drops. Pretty much to be expected for Sony and MS, although the Wii U is another matter entirely.
