For all of January and part of February, many regions of the USA were out of stock for the 360 units (except the arcade and Halo editions apparently). Not a "completely sold out" like the Wii, but low stock overall none-the-less. This was report in several threads on several boards from different people (the best source was the traditional retail musings threads at neogaf).
Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.
