Well they would have had to change the name to distance themselves from the brand created with the Wii. That also has a negative side effect of making customers that did buy the Wii (which were a lot haha) that they are either alienated by the new system or that there is no successor to the system they have.

Second, by making a similar system, it doesn't guarantee that developers will make those games for the system or that the fans of those games will buy a Ninty system to play them if they are there.

So would it have been more successful earlier on? No clue haha. Too many variables that could push it in too many directions.
