Despite stumbling into 3D, I have found the Galaxy entries have finally lifted 3D Mario tot he excellence of 2D Mario. The main issue with recent 2D Marios is feels like Nintendo played it safe in many regards. If they had a Galaxy 3 on Wii U that was as ambitious as the Wii titles 3D might just surpass 2D for me.
So, 2D slightly holds the edge for now, but 3D has been closing in fast in recent decade.
