There are two main reasons (which actually tie into one main reason) as to why I believe it's doing so well.

The first is that there is mad hype around the machine so it's selling crazy because of that and the second is it's been so long since the last console release that there are more people that want to jump and purchase it right away because they've been anticipating next gen gaming for a while now.

i'll add two three more.

1. consoles do so much more than they used to.  netflix is a huge reason why i turn my ps3 on.   knowing how much use i'll get out of a ps4 it is really easy to justify a $400 purchase...  much much moreso than when it was just a machine to play a game or two.   hell, it's worth it to just pay the extra $100 (relative to waiting for a price cut) just to get another year of use out of netflix on the ps4 with its really fast OS than to stay on the ps3 and its long load times.

2.

3.

edit: added a third reason.  :P

Those certainly are other factors to why it's doing so well. I wouldn't call them main reasons as to why it's doing as well as it is (except for your reason #1) but they definitely do their own part.

I guess it really boils down to one overarching reason, and that is the PS4 really is an ultimate entertainment device (although I still think the two reasons I listed are two of the biggest driving factors in how well it's currently selling).
