Have you watched Ponyo btw. Most impressive hand drawn animation I've seen. My kids are addicted to it, it's probably been played over 50 times already. I went straight for the blu-ray when it came out so can't compare it to dvd, but it looks amazing on blu-ray. Perfect line detail and color. |
I just watched it on youtube. The animation is amazing.
It's to similar to the Frog Prince fairy tale story from the Brothers Grim. Or even a Beauty and the beast. Or any movie that has an animal/sea creature example Little Mermaid etc. Evolve instantly at some point in the story and fall in love with a human. It's been done to death imho, and there wasn't anything I found new and interesting besides the animation.
It even ended with a a kiss and a looney tunes stylized zoom in circle. Eek! That's so cheesy imho. It's banal! If it was the first movie or fairy tale with that plot I had viewed like your children maybe I would've enjoyed it, but I've seen it to many times to be impressed by it once again. It was like eating a cheeseburger (For the hundreth time) but this time! With the ketchup on the bottom instead of the top!!!! Big deal.
How's that for a scathing review? I think Spirited Away and even Mononoke have storys we don't see to often (or at least not over saturated/overkilled), and as you get older I like more original/different storylines from my entertainment. That's me. The voice acting was par or below as well for me on the English dub. It's a good homage film with beautiful animation, and also with overdone themes. So for me it's a cash grab at worst and a retro homage at best. Yep I don't prefer it, and if it wasn't for the animation I doubt anyone would care about it. Maybe I missed something in the movie though.
Someone on Amazon said it well and gave Ponyo 1 star he/she said.
It's a movie, not a painting. It needs to have a story.
I agree with that and even compared the Ponyo's father to a cross between Cher and Steven Tyler lmbo! I could complain and go on for longer but yeah the story/chars are a mess for me too.
