Assassin's Creed 4 for sure, there weren't a lot of pirate adventure / naval strategy games made last gen. Just because it's an annual title doesn't mean it's Call of Duty, and if you're going to recycle some basic control concepts, at least make the locales interesting which AC4 definitely did.
I hadn't played a NFS game in ages so I can accept that as a fault - I enjoyed it because I hadn't played one in a while and it was basically a super polished Burnout with killer visuals and solid online integration. Also it was a vast location change from Most Wanted (which was all city), though I didn't play that until after Rivals.
This versus something like NSMBU which is almost indistinguishable from NSMB on the Wii and DS, in terms of gameplay, graphics, level design and setting. Or Pikmin. Super Mario World 3D got the visuals down pat but even that one wore out its welcome. Actually I think that is the main problem, while Nintendo still makes games that control perfectly with notable characters, they've gotten really generic lately.
