I'm not saying he should or shouldn't resign but I'm tired of seeing this suggested.  

If things worked like this, nothing would ever change in the world of business.  Once you had one successful product, you could sit at the helm of a company through years of losses and whatever else because "Hey, remember that time I had a success with that product?  Yup, so you can't get rid of me because maybe I'll do it again".

Failures can also be humbling, and make sure that you make improvements next time around, so equally it's not always beneficial to pull the carpet from under someone at the first whiff of trouble.

There's a happy medium in between, but success in the past =/= success in the future.
