I think to that Spirited Away pulled off very nicely, and has some interesting subliminal message/Japanese culture layers to it. Where as Mononoke felt more straight, and like an enviromental film with a positive message (building a better world even though some men never learn) with a cheesy love story that went almost nowhere, maybe to preachy and cliched for my tastes in movies now to be rewatching it more than twice. The first time I saw Mononoke I was very mpressed though. Haha you probably think I'm a dick now! Anyhow if you haven't watched it you should check into it. Cool little fact Chihiros voice is done by that creepy girl in The Ring. She looks a lot hotter now though lmao! She also did the voice in Disney's Lilo and Stitch but I have yet to watch it. Oh well... |
No worries, Spirited away is my nr 2 all time favorite movie, right after Mononoke. Spirited away is probably next for a blu-ray release, they've covered all of them by now. I'm also still waiting for Porco rosso and Kiki's delivery service's blu-rays to make it to NA.
Spirited away had a bigger awe inspiring first viewing, but after having watched both movies numerous times, Mononoke still comes out on top.
This was my review of Mononoke http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=5185564
and Spirited away http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=5182307
I'm still resising getting the import, the Japanese covers are awesome but at over $80 a piece I'm better off at least waiting for the Honk Kong international release. Once I get one I might start buying the whole series again :(
I expect more out of a blu-ray version of Spirited away, same way with Totoro and Howl's moving castle. Both look great on blu-ray but Howl's moving castle revealed a whole layer of fine detail that the dvd simply couldn't capture.
Have you watched Ponyo btw. Most impressive hand drawn animation I've seen. My kids are addicted to it, it's probably been played over 50 times already. I went straight for the blu-ray when it came out so can't compare it to dvd, but it looks amazing on blu-ray. Perfect line detail and color.
