It's available for import, but i'm waiting for a more affordable version. All Ghibli movies look great on blu-ray. The extra detail in Howl's moving castle stands out especially. |
I saw Mononke about 10 years ago in HD and I liked it very much, I think it was on HDNet at the time. But honestly after seeing Spirited Away I felt that movie had more magic and intrigue, I'm dying to get Spirited Away on Blu-Ray! The whole challenging childhood and growing up and overcoming your personal fears vibe. The main character Chihiro is so damn likable, and believable. Even the english actress does a great job. Some of the earlier Miyazaki English actors fail to deliver great performances imho, unlike Chihiro's/Daveigh Chase did imho.
I think to that Spirited Away pulled off very nicely, and has some interesting subliminal message/Japanese culture layers to it. Where as Mononoke felt more straight, and like an enviromental film with a positive message (building a better world even though some men never learn) with a cheesy love story that went almost nowhere, maybe to preachy and cliched for my tastes in movies now to be rewatching it more than twice. The first time I saw Mononoke I was very mpressed though. Haha you probably think I'm a dick now! Anyhow if you haven't watched it you should check into it.
Cool little fact Chihiros voice is done by that creepy girl in The Ring. She looks a lot hotter now though lmao! She also did the voice in Disney's Lilo and Stitch but I have yet to watch it. Oh well...
