Everyone and their grandma don't watch E3, you're right. But, everyone and their grandma don't buy gaming consoles in their first month. Most of those people are ones who would watch E3 or pay attention to gaming news.
However, I'm not saying E3 is everything. It's a big part of a good impression, though.
