Why was Twilight so special? (Other similar films failing)

So casting on these other films has been an issue? I have no clue who is "hot" with young females, have those two had a successful film outside of the Twilight series?

The other films weren't as popular book series as Twlight (~120 million sold) and 50 Shades of Grey (~90 million sold). I meant in comparision to these two that 50 Shades will flop because of casting, removal of explicit scenes, and the demographic it is targeting.
