Do you need the gamepad?

So I tried everything with the pro controller just now and it seems that a few things doesn't seem to work for me such as the eshop... I can't seem to do shit with it which is weird... And also the web browser doesn't seem to work correctly either... And most importantly, the System Settings don't work either so maybe its not such a good idea to get it without the gamepad after all... Also, if you get a wiiU, you may (not sure) have to sync a gamepad to it the first time as a mandatory requirement (but I am not too sure)
