Nope, there is a power button on the pro controller and u press that to turn it on after u sync it to the wiiU first that is and you navigate using the analog sticks, you need the sensor bar to play wii games or games with motion controls but for mario, nope

Just remember to press X on the main screen to switch to the home screen menu
