The purpose of ads are to create demand for a product. There is little purpose to paying for adds when you cannot meet demand. My bet is they start buy adds around the same time there are news stories about it being sold out everywhere, that creates more of a fury. Remember in cmas 07 when Nintendo did not run ANY Wii adds (they did run adds for specific games) thats because all Wiis were selling out within seconds.
End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)
Wii- 72 million 3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases
360- 37 million Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak
PS3- 29 million Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut
