There's two things Nintendo can and are doing.
1) make a profit off the hardware & peripherals
2) Pay to Play (already announced).
We know Nintendo is working with Chinese game developers. Expect games for the Chinese (and likely Middle East & South America) that are basically free to get with lots of microtransactions. Otherwise, games like Brawl & Mario Kart will be pirated like crazy, not much you can do there.
