It required the expansion pak it to play single player, play four player multiplayer, save your characters stats(hit%, kills, deaths, etc,) and a slight increase to textures. If you wanted to do challenges and play two player multiplayer with bots, then you could still do so.
Just clearing that up, because if the expansion pack was required to function, then you wouldn't be able to play anything. You're just limited to what you can play.
