How is the DS game compared to the GBA games. I own it but haven't played it. |
It definitely didn't live up to the GBA games, but it wasn't a bad game by any means. My biggest complaints were the difficulty being toned down and the inclusion of two big points of no-return. The latter really ticked me off during 1st playthrough, since I don't normally use strategy guides on my first run for games like this. Kept me from getting one of the summons and two of the Djinn.
I thought the story was good, at least compared to the previous games, but it tried too hard to add unnecessary lore and area backstory IMO, to the point where it seemed odd that parts of the world seemed to have such a rich history that wasn't even remotely hinted at in the first two games. I personally treated most of it as stuff that the heroes skipped over during their first adventure, but some locations are so vast, it's hard to believe these massive castle towns and huge port cities were just missed during the GBA games. Oftentimes, it felt as if these huge civilizations just somehow emerged entirely during the timeskip. Which is extremely hard to believe, since it was only ~15 years.
It's still an enjoyable game though, if you can look past those issues. I'm certainly still excited for the next entry.
