Super Bowl commercials are overrated.

There's 110 million people watching, and no other type of program comes near to matching its ratings. The second most watched event on TV after the SB in the US is The Oscars with 40 million viewers. There's a reason why the SB is so expensive for ad spots.

It is a complete waste of money.  The ads that don't make the Super Bowl get just as much attention for free.

Waste of Money?   4 million dollars to get an add spot where over 100 million people WANT to watch commericals is a bargain.   Thats less then 4 cents per viewer, not to mention all of the people that now go on youtube and watch the commerical again expecially if it is a hit.   They could have just shown off Mario Kart for 30 seconds and tons of people would have went "I love Mario Kart, that new version looks AMAZING."  

Yeah it's not just the commercial, if you happen to make a funny spot or have one with a famous celebrity ... then odds are it's going to get a ton of views on Youtube and perhaps even be featured on things like Good Morning America and CNN the day afterwards. 

But with a celebrity you're probably looking at $1-$2 million extra for a 30-second spot. Still worth it. 

And yet at work today we talked quite a bit about the game, and not a single word was mentioned about even a single ad.

Meanwhile, the cost of an ad has quadrupled from 1 million to 4 million since the mid-1990's, and viewership has only climbed from 90 million to about 120 million.
