The gap in quality family and kid-focused franchises should Nintendo be diminished could indeed have adverse long term effects. The industry still largely targets the "NES gamer", the same people that were pre-teens in the NES era and are full adults now, and a weakened Nintendo is certainly not going to help the industry grow.
