I agree with Cobretti @bolded.
I will concede that if you were to rank the 100 best games of that generation there would be more PS games in that list than N64 games. But if we just rank the top 20 games of the generation - the best of the best - then the N64 would have far more games present IMO.

Of course top 10/20's etc are entirely subjective but... no, just no.
N64 was basically a Nintendo/Rare console, and that was it. Like rpgs? Too bad, you're not getting any. In fact, I think that if you take Square's whole library from that generation, you're getting pretty close to the number of must-have games on the N64.
All the games that defined the generation were released on the PS1. I can think of 3 exceptions: Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Goldeneye. But that's beyond the topic.

if you like fighting games you were SOL too. and no just Smash doesnt cut it.
|
Do Killer Instinct, War Gods, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mortal Kombat 4, Mace: The Dark Age, or Fighter's Destiny help cut it?
|
Killer Instinct Gold was just a port of 2, Trilogy another port. MK4 was ok, Mace was a terrible game same as Fighter's Destiny. SO no it doesnt help cut it if you were a fighting game fan you were still SOL. THose games dont come CLOSE to Street Fighter, Rival Schools, Darkstalkers, Tekken, Bushido Blade, Bloody Roar, etc. I could go on but ill stop. IMHO N64 doesnt come close to PS1 in this category in terms of quantity AND quality.

True, the PS1 had more but dismissing good games because they were ports? Where else where you going to play Killer Instinct Gold!? It was an arcade game like almost all of the games you mentioned. But yeah, we'll stop. I had Killer Instinct Gold back in 96. When my friend let me borrow his PS1 with Tekken and Street Fighter Alpha, I decided I was gonna buy a PS1....and I did. It wasn't "Just Smash Bros." as mentioned before, though.

Where else was i going to play KI Gold? On SNES, that game was just an updayed port of KI 2, i could play that in arcade, it wasnt exactly exclusive and honestly i never liked that series so for ME its not a point in N64s favor. Way better fighters than that out there. Fair enough for me as a HUGE fighting game fan, N64 was a weak system. It didnt have near the amout of game in the genre and the ones it had were mostly mediocore and it missed stuff like SF which is a no no. Im not dismissing them. im saying the whole thing kinda blew. thats just me.
