Mario is the least of this industries problem, it's a game on one home console and not the most popular one at the moment either. And the game isn't even on Nintendo consoles for Mario to steal it's shine. Mario games didn't stop great games from being acknowledged. The problem for this particular game was not that it wasn't good, it just didn't stand out amongst all the other great games out there at the moment. Competition is fierce.
Many great games came out last year, as is the norm for consoles on their way out. I kind of get what your saying though, and sometimes I wish certain games would get more attention. W101 comes to mind.
