Yeah, you can already see MS and Sony push more digital content much more this generation and it has only just begun. Its like what you said.. both companies will use online services and digital content as a trojan horse to that end.

MS are undoubtedly on this. They were spearheading in that direction with the Xbox One before the whole 'always online' DRM debacle came up. What stopped it from happening? People didn't buy it. Thus the Xbox One they have envisioned never came to be. Which makes me think that an all-digital console from both camps is still a long way away. About Sony.. I'm not sure, but I'm certain they must be on the same, or (at the very least) on a similar wavelength.

Y'know.. I'd actually laugh if Nintendo beats them both to the punch. By releasing their new console as an all digital device and succeeding, at that.

I think it would be funnier if MS push the pre-180 onto consumers with the new SKU. THanks for playing guys, we appreciated all those day 1 sales!

Yeah. Doing a complete reversal after being adament on what their vision was. Then.. (after much deliberation) do another reversal on it within the same gen on would be just, hilarious.

Curious to see how people would react to that xP
