Sony are targeting home console gamers with this console.  Home console gamers game on home consoles.  Nintendo fans game on handhelds and home consoles because they've had 4 generations of being conditioned that that's what they should do if they want to experience the best of what Nintendo have to offer.

I'm not sure about that. Nintendo handhelds always sell way more than Nintendo home consoles. So if these are all (or mostly) bought by Nintendo fans, then the majority of Nintendo fans have seemingly decided that they can do without Nintendo's biggest games... which makes dubious their status as Nintendo fans.

It is true that Nintendo is a much more established brand when it comes to handheld gaming, and it is also true that Sony's portables tend to overshoot a portion of the handheld market by being higher end while still not being quite good enough to deliver the "home console on the go" that they promise, and these aren't immaterial things. But I don't think they're as fundamental as the fact that Nintendo treats its handhelds as its highest priority while Sony treats the Vita like something that escaped rather than something they released. I would be inclined to agree with you that there is just no market there anymore if Sony had made a serious effort on the software side and still failed, but they didn't and I believe that's what the sales are reflecting.
