Because they've been doing nothing BUT targeting children. Have you seen the recent WiiU ads? Here they are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bso27e3Inzc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsbeQeiwW9o Nintendo has a huge image problem in that they're seen as the "kiddie" console. Microsoft and Sony have done a great job over the years by making Nintendo's platform seem like something only children should buy. How many teenagers get together to play Call of Duty on their WiiUs? The big N hasn't exactly done a lot to fix their imaging problem. Marketing primarily to kids is a stupid idea considering kids are getting more and more into smartphones and tablets. The WiiU won't be able to survive with just kids buying it. |
The problem is kids and adults still don't know what the wii u is. They screwed up there with the wiiu and will never get any audience because of the name. The ad is the proof of that. If the wiiu was called wii 2 it would have sold a lot better with the launch of mario kart at 250. Only chance now is if they rebrand the wiiu to wii 2 or kill it. The wii was simple to understand and market. Perfect for the family. The wiiu isn't that. It has confusing controller and name.
Onto your argument about teenagers. That is irrelevant because the wii proved that the market is strong in other areas. You say teenagers and I say what about the low sales of casual games on ps3? You say what about the 18-32. I say about the 50-72 that bought the wii? The imaging problem is only problem if your marketing at the wrong audience. You are proving my point. If you have image you can either use it to your advantage or disadvantage. A successful business man says the glass is half-full instead of half-empty. Trying to get the other audience is by your own admitted words counterproductive.
Saying people are now on to tablets and smartphone isn't an argument. Casual games on the wii are still outselling the Xbox or ps3 versions by far. Look at just dance and Disney games. The 3ds which is at 42 million proves you wrong. Nintendo problem was they made an anti-casual console to point were it is simply unattractive to casuals.
