MS wanted to make an entertainment center, Sony wanted to make a powerful gaming system.

This 100 times, MS are fine with the x1 being less powerful then the ps4, only reason they damage control is for publicity and to attract attention. They want to sell the x1 as an entertainement system and not just as a console, they bank on using kinect and tv features as other selling points, hence not needing the added power to attract attention.

This!  If you scroll back a number of years back to the original Xbox.  MS was never shy to describe MS's entry into the home console market.  This is part of their road map from day 1.  Everyone has been fighting for the living room.  A place where whole familys gather and spend time.  TV marketing has known this is the holy grail for a long time and MS wanted a piece.

Now we're into 2014 and you're seeing them still on the same path.  They want the living room, just like everyone else.   As we saw with the 360, it game out as a gaming system and slowly morphed over to a multimedia platform.  Now you could order a pizza, watch YouTube, Netflix and whatnot.  With the Xbone, now you have them going after regular TV watching habits.  Now they can see what you watch, how long you watch, and with Kinect, how many people are watching.  All this is valuable info.  We'll see how it pans out.

Also to note, MS has been pretty bad with hardware their entire history.  They did make some of the first ergonomic mice, but folks like Logitech always made them better.  They made big clunky keyboards (and still do), but other 3rd parties made them better.  Now you have Surface, Zune (RIP), and these other entries into HW landscape and still have to struggle.

MS is an interesting beast.  They make some much money from Office and Windows products, those two products fully fund everything that MS does.  It pays for their mistakes and gets their foot in the door for (video games) industries they dont know much about.  Not many companies have that type of backbone/safety net.
