Over the last several weeks since around December, the WiiU has bested the 360 in weekly hardware sales -- something it hadn't really accomplished since launch.
Also, the comparison so far is that WiiU's Jan '14 hardware sales are higher Jan '13 -- if only by a margin of few thousand units. Not all that bad considering all the negative Nintendo press and increased competition in the hardware marketplace. Not the best, but not all that bad.
I think a low price 360 + kinect has been more of a competitor for WiiU than what anyone @ Nintendo might have realized, but it looks like Ninty's starting to break it the other way. I say that because the 360 + kinect is aligned primarily to families, casuals, "value"-based shoppers -- Nintendo's most sought after market segment. At this point, I figure the only "gamers" buying a 360 are those who had their 360 break (or people new to gaming who don't know that the 360 has been around since 2005)
Certainly most casuals have gone to mobile, but a remnant of those still enjoy purchasing game consoles.
I think as MS pivots more towards XOne marketing, sales, and development, Nintendo can keep the momentum going with this market segment. XOne is too new, too expensive a proposition to be appealing to that kind of customer.
I'm not saying Nintendo will be No. 1, but rather a comfortable 3rd place in next gen rather than completely "doomed".
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
