It's not a 'regular game controller'. It is EVERYTHING Nintendo banked on for Wii U's success. It was their trump card and people didn't care for it.

People not buying the system, or not buying it yet, does not equate to "oh they just didn't like that controller".

Also....yeah, it kind of IS a regular game controller. Know why? D-pad, 4 face buttons, start and select, 4 L/R triggers, two analog sticks. That is the basis of the modern "regular controller". It functions in every single way the same way ANY other normal controller does. It just so happens to also have a big touch screen in it. Looking at it any other way is really reaching to try to make some kind of point.

You're downplaying what Nintendo's intention with this controller was. The entire Wii U was built around it and not the other way round. It wasn't meant to be a basic I/O device, it was meant to be the facilitator of "a whole new and immersive way to experience games". And it has not fulfilled to that expectation Nintendo had. It did not deliver that experience and that's why it is struggling.

Imagine Nintendo said "OK, the gamepad turned out to be a dud, we're tossing the pad and replacing it with a classic controller". What do you think would happen?

EDIT: To drive my point home, if you say to Nintendo that this is just a regular game controller with a touch screen on it, they will vehemently disagree with you saying "This is not just a regular controller with a touch screen on it. This is a whole new way to experience games like never before. *proceed to tell you about all these fantastic scenarios that involve the solitary gamepad and your buddies with their wiimotes*"

Sound familiar? Yeah E32011,2012,2013.

The fact that you yourself think this is just a basic controller with a screen slabbed in the middle is exactly what's getting Nintendo into trouble with the consumers. We think the exact same thing. Welcome to the club.
