I think you're accusing the wrong people of stockpiling. I happen to know for a fact that at least one retailer was hoarding units for the Smash Brothers launch. WAL-MART.
I went to Sam's Club in Parkersburg West Virginia last Saturady and they had 57 Wii's. Let that sink in ...... 57! That's more than I saw the entire Christmas holiday and I worked for EB!. This was also at one location in basically the middle of nowhere. There are over one thousand Sam's Clubs in the country and this was a nationwide event.
Now the question becomes, Why would retailers stockpile? The answer should be pretty obvious. they make more money on the games and accessories than the systems. therefore, the more systems you have to sell the more game you will sel which makes you a ton more money than selling a couple at a time.
